CBD for Pets

The number of people interested in using CBD as an alternative health aide is rising. Correspondingly, those same individuals are now giving the compound to their pets. You can now find reviews, photos and videos of dogs, cats and even horses with renewed youth, calmed anxiety and clearing skin.  And it’s no surprise: all mammals have an endocannabinoid system (ECS).

Your Pet’s Endocannabinoid System

Just as humans have an endocannabinoid system, our mammalian pets have the same mechanism. The endocannabinoid system is a series of molecular receptors that work to maintain homeostasis amongst the physiologic systems of the body, meaning CBD’s medicinal benefits may benefit our dogs and cats as well. While research is ongoing, we have outlined what we know so far below:

The Endocannabinoid System in dogs and cats performs the same functions as it does in humans and other mammals.

Endocannabiniods are naturally occurring molecules within the body that are synthesized on demand in order to activate cannabinoid receptors. Once activated, these receptors work to maintain the body’s homeostasis. The body has two main types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors reside mostly in the cerebral cortex. They help regulate appetite, emotion, memory and pain. CB2 receptors are located throughout the body’s nervous and immune system. These receptors regulate inflammation, which is known to be the source of many auto-immune and pain symptoms.

Plant cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) such as CBD can stimulate cannabinoid receptors the same manner as naturally-produced endocannabinoids. Further, CBD is believed to encourage the ECS to produce more of its own cannabinoids.

CBD Guidelines for Pets

There are typically three standard CBD products for pets: oils, capsules and treats. CBD oil in tincture form is the purest method of CBD delivery. Therefore, this approach ensures exact dosage and avoids the addition of additives and fillers to your pet’s diet.

In general, CBD oils/tinctures are administered by a dropper. The exact amount needed for each animal and ailment varies and the general rule of thumb is to start low. Standard dosing for small dogs (sub 20-lbs) usually consists of two to four drops twice to four times daily. Another recommendation for determining the correct dose for your pet is to begin with one drop of CBD oil per 10 lbs. of pet weight. Maintain dosage for a week and then increase by one drop per 10 lbs if needed.

Measuring CBD for Pets

Droppers on each C4 Healthlabs bottle, regardless of concentration, show graduated mL (milliliter) measurements. Each mL represents 1/30 of the bottle’s total concentration.

By subdividing the dropper into quarters, you can easily measure total CBD to suit your needs.

Many customers who purchase our NATURAL flavored products share their bottles with their pets, measuring out effective doses by the droppers. Others purchase NATURAL specifically for their pets, and continue to enjoy the CITRUS flavor they enjoy. We recommend consulting your veterinarian before beginning a CBD regime for your pet.
