CBD Guidelines for Pets
When choosing CBD for pets, there are three common product formats: oils, capsules, and treats. Among these, CBD oil tinctures are considered the purest delivery method, allowing for precise measurement and avoiding unnecessary fillers or additives.
Why Many Pet Owners Prefer CBD Oil
-
Offers exact, measurable dosing
-
Can be adjusted drop by drop
-
Avoids added ingredients often found in treats or chews
-
Easy to mix with food or administer directly
How to Dose CBD Oil for Pets
CBD oils are typically given using a dropper, and dosage varies depending on your pet’s weight and their unique response. A common guideline is to start low and increase slowly.
General Starting Dosages
-
Small dogs (under 20 lbs): 2–4 drops, 2–4 times per day
-
Weight-based method: Begin with 1 drop of CBD oil per 10 lbs of body weight
Maintain the starting dose for one week. If additional support is needed, increase by one drop per 10 lbs and monitor how your pet responds.

Your Pet’s Endocannabinoid System
Just as humans have an endocannabinoid system, our mammalian pets have the same mechanism. The endocannabinoid system is a series of molecular receptors that work to maintain homeostasis amongst the physiologic systems of the body, meaning CBD’s medicinal benefits may benefit our dogs and cats as well. While research is ongoing, we have outlined what we know so far below:
The Endocannabinoid System in dogs and cats performs the same functions as it does in humans and other mammals.
Endocannabinoids are naturally occurring molecules within the body that are synthesized on demand in order to activate cannabinoid receptors. Once activated, these receptors work to maintain the body’s homeostasis. The body has two main types of receptors: CB1 and CB2. CB1 receptors reside mostly in the cerebral cortex. They help regulate appetite, emotion, memory, and pain. CB2 receptors are located throughout the body’s nervous and immune systems. These receptors regulate inflammation, which is known to be the source of many auto-immune and pain symptoms.
Plant cannabinoids (phytocannabinoids) such as CBD can stimulate cannabinoid receptors in the same manner as naturally-produced endocannabinoids. Further, CBD is believed to encourage the ECS to produce more of its own cannabinoids.
